Science and the Practice of Medicine

This survey course explores health and healing in the late 18th and 19th centuries and covers topics such as medical theory and practice; institutions of medical education and care; the doctor-patient relationship; social meanings of disease; race, gender, and the body; and public health and sanitary reform.

This survey course explores the rapid transformation of health care from the late 19th century to the present day. Topics include: the transformation of surgery; bacteriology; the modern hospital; educational reform and professional control; eugenics; risk, behavior, and chronic disease; biomedical networks; genetic medicine; and global health.
